Tips and caveats: a diabetic diet
A diabetic patient can follow a weight loss diet, but there are some conditions and advice that must be taken into account before following a diet.
A diabetic needs a healthy diet that is appropriate for him, as he should eat foods that help improve his sugar levels, and avoid foods that could harm his health.
A diabetic patient can follow a weight-loss diet, but before you follow it, you should familiarize yourself with a set of important tips and caveats.
1- Insert fiber for your daily diet:
It is advised that diabetics eat at least 8 grams of fiber at every meal, as this will help control blood sugar, especially when eating foods rich in carbohydrates, and it gives the body a feeling of fullness.
There are many ideal fiber options for a diabetic such as peas, beans, untreated oats, fruits such as apples, pears, berries, citrus fruits, and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, broccoli, and carrots.
2- Eat protein:
Protein provides the energy needed for the body and it also helps in maintaining stable blood sugar, as it reduces cravings for sugar and increases the feeling of fullness.
A fat-free protein should be chosen because it poses many health risks, especially for diabetics.
Healthy foods rich in protein are: eggs, seafood, skim dairy products, lean meats and poultry.
3- Avoid some fruits:
Despite the importance of fruits in dieting, but some types of fruits should be excluded if a diabetic patient follows a diet, as some types of fruits contain a high percentage of sugars, the most prominent of which are:
Ripe bananas, mangoes, grapes, figs and dates.
And the juices of these fruits should be avoided because they are rich in high levels of sugars even without adding sugar to them.
In the case of eating other types of fruits, you should consult a doctor about the appropriate quantities during the day because they also contain sugars, but at low levels.
4- Drink more water:
While following a diabetic diet, he should be careful to drink large quantities of water and fluids without adding sugar to them, as these fluids help to regulate blood glucose levels.
5- Not following a harsh diet:
Diabetics should refrain from any harsh diet for fast weight loss and harmful chemical systems, as they can cause serious complications, and the best is to choose a healthy diet that contains various nutrients.
6- Avoid caffeine during dieting:
It is necessary to limit the caffeine intake of a diabetic patient as it can have negative effects on blood sugar levels.
This is because caffeine causes the body to decrease insulin sensitivity, which causes difficulty in absorbing sugar from the blood after eating any food, at which time the body produces more insulin and thus the blood sugar level rises.
7- Exercising while dieting
In addition to eating healthy foods, exercise helps manage blood sugar levels and prevent heart disease risks.
It is recommended to exercise for 30 minutes a day, so that it is not less than 150 minutes per week, but it is necessary to start a gradual exercise
8- Consult your doctor first:
You should consult your doctor first about dieting that is appropriate for the weight and condition of a diabetic, as there are systems that are not appropriate for this disease such as intermittent fasting.
It can help the doctor to better distribute meals so that medications or sugar injections are taken on time in conjunction with different foods.
